Still deciding where to spend your next holiday in Greece? Then look no further than Lefkada — the Ionian island that remains a well-kept secret, offering dreamlike beaches, dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters and a tranquil, authentic atmosphere far from mass tourism.

Located in the Ionian Sea and connected to mainland Greece by a movable bridge, Lefkada combines everything travelers dream of — breathtaking beaches, lush mountain villages and vibrant local culture.

Despite its increasing popularity, the island remains quieter than many of its Aegean counterparts, offering a perfect balance between relaxation and adventure.

How to get to Lefkada

The easiest way to reach Lefkada is by flying to Preveza (Aktio) Airport, located just 30 minutes from Lefkada Town.

Alternatively, you can fly to Athens or Thessaloniki, spend a few days exploring, and then drive or take a bus to the island.

If you’re renting a car, note that you might encounter brief waiting times at the bridge connecting Lefkada with the mainland, as it opens every hour to allow boats to pass.

Best time to visit

The best months to enjoy Lefkada’s Mediterranean charm are May through October.

July and August bring warm temperatures around 30°C and lively crowds, while spring and early autumn are ideal for quieter stays, hiking, and sightseeing.

In April, May, September and October, you’ll find pleasant weather, warm waters and more affordable accommodation rates.

Where to stay on Lefkada

Lefkada offers a range of accommodation options — from seaside apartments to boutique hotels.

The east coast is flatter and ideal for families, while the west coast is more rugged and known for its dramatic cliffs and hidden coves.

Top areas to stay include:

Lefkada Town: The island’s capital, lively harbor and charming old streets.

Nydri: Perfect for boat tours, nightlife and day trips.

Agios Nikitas: A cozy seaside village with a traditional feel.

Vasiliki: Popular among windsurfers and adventure travelers.

Nikiana & Sivota: Quiet fishing villages ideal for couples seeking peace and romance.

Mountain villages worth visiting

Beyond the beaches, Lefkada’s mountain villages offer a glimpse into local life:

Karya: Known for handmade crafts and traditional embroidery.

Kalamitsi: Offers panoramic sea views, Avali Beach, and scenic windmills.

Egklouvi: The island’s highest village, famous for its lentil fields — said to produce Greece’s best lentils.

Exanthia and Syvros: Peaceful hilltop settlements surrounded by olive groves and cypress trees.

The island’s best beaches

Lefkada’s coastline is among the most spectacular in Greece, especially along the west coast:

Porto Katsiki: Framed by towering cliffs, this turquoise bay is Lefkada’s most iconic beach.

Egremni Beach: Accessible via nearly 400 steps, it rewards visitors with stunning color contrasts.

Kathisma Beach: Easy to reach and family-friendly.

Megali Petra & Avali Beach: Remote, peaceful and surrounded by natural beauty.

Mylos Beach: Can only be reached on foot or by boat — an ideal escape for solitude seekers.

Agiofili & Ammoussa Beach: Two small yet picturesque beaches on the southern coast.

Things to do on Lefkada

Lefkada isn’t just for sunbathing — it’s a playground for nature and adventure lovers:

Hike Mount Elati (1,182 m) for panoramic island views.

Try kite or windsurfing in Vasiliki, one of Europe’s best spots.

Take a boat tour to nearby islands like Meganisi or Kefalonia.

Food and nightlife

Lefkada’s cuisine celebrates fresh, local ingredients — olive oil, herbs, vegetables and seafood.

In the evenings, Lefkada Town and Nydri come alive with tavernas and seaside bars featuring live Greek music, while the smaller west-coast villages offer quiet dinners under the stars.
