Mohamed Salah Mykonos holiday: where he was filmed

Mohamed Salah at a beach club on Psarou, Mykonos

Mykonos tourism 2026 has a headline it did not pay for. Mohamed Salah, a free agent since his Liverpool contract expired this summer, was filmed by Mykonos Live TV at a beach club on Psarou this week, and the clip travelled from Greek outlets to Turkish sports pages within hours. Behind the celebrity week sits a season the island has been waiting two years for.

Why Mykonos is back in the search lists

The footage lasts about half a minute and shows nothing more dramatic than a footballer walking between sunbeds. It still worked as advertising: the clip reached Turkish sports pages within hours, and Turkey now sends more than two million visitors a year to Greek islands. Salah was also seen earlier in the week in Matogianni, the busiest street in Mykonos Town, where fans stopped him for selfies.

Mykonos tourism 2026: occupancy and rates

The short term rental data tells the commercial story. In the 2026 measurement by Beyond Pricing, reported by Tornos News, Mykonos shows the strongest recovery of every destination tracked: bookings run about 21 percent fuller than the same period of 2025, and revenue per available night has moved from 141.3 euros to 177.5 euros, an increase of 25.6 percent. Average nightly rates hold between 195 and 430 euros from mid July to the end of August.

The scale is the part visitors underestimate. The island’s permanent population is around 10,000. In peak season it absorbs arrivals counted in the hundreds of thousands per month, which is what keeps the rate curve where it is.

What a sunbed on Psarou costs

Psarou is the beach the footage came from, and it is the most expensive strip of sand on the island. Beach club price guides for 2026 put back row sunbeds from about 70 euros per person and front rows above 110 euros, with the most exposed front positions described at 250 to 400 euros and an August minimum spend of 400 to 600 euros before anything is ordered. Prices differ by club and by row, so a single figure would be misleading, but the range explains who the beach is built for.

Getting there: two ports, two speeds

From Athens there are two departure points. The fastest ferry from Piraeus reaches Mykonos in 2 hours 40 minutes, and from Rafina in 2 hours 15 minutes; conventional vessels take 4 to 6 hours. In peak season Rafina runs 9 to 10 crossings a day and Piraeus at least 4, with first departures at 07:00. Our Greek island hopping guide sets out the connections onward to the rest of the Cyclades.

Who is filling the ferries

The fastest growing market in Greek island tourism is not the one on the sunbeds at Psarou. Turkish visitor numbers to the islands went from 416,000 in 2022 to 2,253,513 in 2025 according to transport ministry figures, with the trade expecting around 2.7 million in 2026, and ferry bookings from Turkey up 53.9 percent year on year.

That traffic lands on a different set of islands. The visa on arrival scheme that carries most of it covers 12 Aegean islands close to the Turkish coast, and Mykonos is not among them, so Turkish travellers need a Schengen visa to reach it. Our guide to the Greece visa on arrival lists the islands, the fee and the seven day limit.
