August Full Moon in Greece: 126 Sites Open Free on 28 August

One night a year, Greek archaeological sites stay open after dark and let visitors in for free. The occasion is the August full moon, and for 2026 the date is Friday 28 August. It is the single busiest cultural night of the Greek summer, and it is worth planning around rather than stumbling into.

How many sites take part

A total of 126 archaeological sites, historic places, monuments and museums across the country will open with free admission. Of those, 61 will host events such as concerts, guided night tours or theatre. The remaining 65 open their gates without a programme, simply for visits. The Ministry of Culture has run the event for 27 consecutive years.

Opening hours

Sites without a programme generally open at 19:30 or 20:00 and close at 23:00 or midnight. Exact hours vary by site, and some close in the afternoon and reopen for the evening. Sites with events follow the programme timing, which usually starts after sunset.

The full list is published on the Ministry of Culture website and is normally finalised in mid-August. Check the individual site page before travelling, because a location can be added or dropped late.

Where to go, and where not to

In Athens, the sites around the Acropolis draw the largest crowds. If your goal is the view rather than the queue, the smaller hilltop sites and the regional museums are the better call. On the islands and in the countryside the same night is markedly quieter, and that is where the event still feels like what it was designed to be.

Late August weather is the other planning variable, and the meltemi is still running at that point in the season; what that means for ferries is covered in our August weather guide.

Why the night is different

Free entry is only part of it. Ancient sites look different under floodlight and moonlight, and the August heat drops sharply after sunset. In a month when many sites close through the middle of the day because of temperature, an evening opening is one of the few chances to walk them in comfort.

Planning notes

The date falls on a Friday, which stacks the cultural night on top of weekend travel. Expect heavy traffic and full car parks in Athens and Thessaloniki, and busy ferries to and from the islands that weekend. Events with limited capacity often ask for advance registration, and popular venues fill before the published start time. Arriving half an hour early is the practical way to avoid the queue.
