Island hopping sounds like freedom and turns into logistics the moment you look at a ferry timetable. Greece has thousands of islands spread across several groups, and the groups do not connect to each other the way a map suggests. The trip works when you accept one rule early: hop inside a group, not between them.
Choose the group before you choose the islands
The Cyclades are the postcard: whitewashed towns, dry landscapes, the strongest connections and the biggest crowds. The Dodecanese, along the Turkish coast, mix medieval towns with quiet coves and are the easiest group to reach from Turkey. The Ionian islands in the west are green and calmer, and the Sporades sit close to the mainland with short crossings.
Crossing between groups usually means backtracking through Athens, which costs a day. A first trip that stays inside one group sees more and travels less.
A seven-day route that actually fits
The most common mistake is four islands in seven days. Two nights on an island means one full day, and one full day is not enough to see anything beyond the port. A workable shape is three islands, with the longest stay in the middle.

Build the route towards your departure airport, not away from it. The last hop should be the shortest of the trip.
Ferries: the part that decides everything
Two kinds of boat run these routes. Conventional ferries are slower, cheaper, steadier in wind and take vehicles. High-speed catamarans halve the time, cost more and are the first to be cancelled when the sea gets rough. On a tight itinerary the slow boat is often the safer booking.
Frequency collapses outside the season. A route with three daily departures in August may drop to two a week in November, and some links close entirely. Check the return leg before booking the outward one.
The meltemi is a scheduling problem, not a weather detail
Through July and August a northerly wind called the meltemi blows across the Aegean, often strengthening in the afternoon. It keeps the Cyclades pleasantly cool while the mainland bakes, and it also cancels fast ferries. When the wind reaches force seven and above, small craft stay in port.
The practical response is to leave a buffer day before any flight home, and to prefer morning crossings, which are usually calmer than afternoon ones.
Booking, luggage and the small print
Tickets are issued against passport details and sell out on popular legs in high season. Boarding usually starts shortly before departure and ends abruptly; ports are large and the gate can be a long walk from the taxi drop-off.

Luggage travels in racks by the door rather than with you, so anything valuable belongs in a small bag you keep. Cabins matter only on overnight sailings, where a seat for eight hours is a false economy.
Coming from Turkey: the short way in
The Dodecanese and the eastern Aegean are reachable directly from the Turkish coast, and the crossings are short. Bodrum to Kos takes about half an hour, Ayvalık to Lesvos around ninety minutes, and Kaş to Kastellorizo less than twenty minutes. Ports on the Turkish side run from Ayvalık and Dikili down through Çeşme, Kuşadası, Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Kaş.
One caveat shapes the whole plan: the visa-on-arrival scheme available to Turkish citizens covers twelve islands, allows up to seven days and is valid only for the island you land on. Hopping onwards from that island requires a Schengen visa, so a multi-island route has to be built on the Schengen document, not the door-step one.

The differences are not cosmetic. The Cyclades take the meltemi full on, which is why they stay cool in August and why fast ferries there are cancelled most often. The Ionian sits outside that wind pattern altogether, so a July itinerary in the west rarely faces the same disruption.
What a good itinerary avoids
Three habits ruin more trips than bad weather. Booking a flight home the same evening as a ferry arrival leaves no margin. Choosing islands by fame rather than by connection wastes days in transit. And treating a one-night stop as a visit means seeing a port, a taverna and nothing else.
The trip improves when the route is shorter than the temptation. Fewer islands, longer stays, morning boats.
