Greece went into August with fires on several fronts at once. Over one weekend, crews worked in Argolida in the Peloponnese, in Boeotia west of Athens, in Achaea, in the Rethymno area of Crete and on Evia. For anyone travelling, the useful question is not whether Greece is safe, which it broadly is, but how to plan around a season that now reliably includes fire.
Where the fires were
In Argolida, the fire around Fichti left hundreds of stremmata of burnt ground, destroyed storage buildings, vehicles and irrigation networks, and damaged homes; crops and olive groves were lost. The response there involved 64 firefighters, 18 vehicles, four aircraft and four helicopters, plus specialist foot teams.
West of Athens, a fire that began at Kalamaki in Boeotia reached the coast at Porto Germeno, where people cut off by road were taken out by sea. Fires also ran in Achaea, in Crete’s Rethymno region and on Evia, where gusts reached 130 kilometres an hour.
The alert system works on location, not on nationality
Evacuation warnings in Greece go out through the 112 emergency alert system. The message reaches every phone connected to a mast in the danger zone, regardless of which country the number belongs to, and it is sent in Greek and English. Foreign visitors receive it automatically; there is nothing to register for.
Each alert usually carries two pieces of information: which settlement is being evacuated and which direction to move in. When the road is cut, as at Porto Germeno, the direction given may be the shore rather than an inland route.
What this means for a trip
Fires in Greece concentrate on the mainland and on the larger islands with forested interiors. Island beach holidays are rarely affected directly; road journeys through the mainland are the ones that need slack in the schedule, because regional road closures happen at short notice.

Why the season is getting harder
The combination that drives the worst days is not heat alone but heat with wind. The meltemi that cools the Aegean in July and August also spreads any fire that starts and grounds the water-bombing aircraft that would otherwise contain it. That is why a 37-degree day with still air is easier to manage than a 33-degree day with eight-force gusts.
