Swiss Airbus A340 named ‘Zug’

in General, Media, Sectoral, Tourism

Swiss AirlinesSwiss International Air Lines’ Airbus A340-300 HB-JMJ was named ‘Zug’ this morning in a ceremony at Zurich Airport.

Fittingly, the naming act was performed with champagne and kirsch, the local cherry schnaps speciality of the city and the canton of the same name. Harry Hohmeister, SWISS CEO, conducted the naming together with Dolfi Müller, the current Mayor of Zug, in the presence of numerous regional guests and media representatives. “We are delighted that, for the first time in the history of Swiss aviation, we now have an aircraft named after the city of Zug,” Hohmeister said at the naming ceremony. “We are immensely proud of the Zug,” Mayor Müller added, “and we look forward to discovering the world with ‘our’ SWISS aircraft!”

HB-JMJ is one of fifteen Airbus A340-300s in the SWISS aircraft fleet. The bestowal of the name ‘Zug’ continues the airline’s policy of naming its aircraft after Swiss cantonal capitals, tourist destinations and local airport municipalities. The four-engined Airbus A340-300 is 63.7 metres long and 16.8 metres high, has a wingspan of 60.3 metres and seats 219 passengers. With its range of 10,500 kilometres, HB-JMJ ‘Zug’ will be deployed throughout SWISS’s worldwide long-haul network, serving destinations such as Sao Paulo, Miami, Beijing, Tokyo and Johannesburg.
