A flower festival is held every six years in one of Europe’s finest Gothic cathedrals. The 2012 Flower Festival in Lincoln Cathedral will take place over five days in August between the Olympic and Paralympic competitions.
The theme of the 2012 festival will be Dreams of Gold, with thousands of flowers arranged in displays in the cathedral. A Taste of Lincolnshire Market selling local produce will be held in Castle Square near the Cathedral during the Flower Festival.
Lincoln’s first cathedral was commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1072. The original Norman building was expanded in the Gothic style in the 13th century and in 1311 the central tower was raised to its present height. The Dreams of Gold Flower Festival and Taste of Lincolnshire Market will take place from 16 to 20 August. The cathedral will be open to visitors 9am–4pm on 16, 17, 18 and 20 August, and also 6.30–8pm on 16 and 18 August, and noon–3pm and 5pm–8pm on Sunday 19 August.
