Continental Airlines May Cancel Flights

Continental AirlinesStarting next month, the U.S Transportation Department can fine airlines up to $27,500 per passenger if planes are on the tarmac for three hours and passengers can’t get off.

This morning, Continental’s CEO said his airline plans to cancel flights rather than risk getting slapped with a huge fine. A domestic Continental flight could easily be carrying 160 people. $27,500 multiplied by 160 passengers makes it a $4.4 million fine.

James Brennan is visiting Sacramento from Austin. He says, “That’s a bit outrageous. Our economy, the way it’s going, that doesn’t even seem feasible.” Air traveler Stephanie Marquez explains, “I would almost rather have them cancel the flight and then you can take another flight instead of having been delayed that long because then you can make other arrangements.”

Making other arrangements isn’t always easy, though. It might be hard to get on another flight. You could also get stuck in the airport overnight or need to get a hotel room. So whether you’re on the runway for hours or waiting around to board, it can be a hassle and inconvenience either way.
