The 8th anniversary of the recognition of Cienfuegos on the UNESCO World Heritage list, is today of a cultural celebration for this southern Cuban city.
With the show “History of Buildings,” by three theater companies and one dance group, the three days of celebrations will close today in the Jose Marti Park, former Plaza de Armas, sponsored by the Office of the Curator of this city, known as “Perla del Sur” (Pearl of the South).
Cienfuegos, located 250 kilometers southeast of Havana, is the only human settlement of 19th century in Latin America that has the highest recognition by the UNESCO for preserving the built heritage.
The 29th session of the organization’s committee approved on July 15, 2005 in Durban, South Africa, the referred condition to the town founded by French-born immigrants on April 22, 1819, as the colony of “Fernandina de Jagua.”
