On the Canary Island of La Palma, the “Ruta de los Volcanes” has reopened. Until the volcanic eruption in September last year, it was considered a highlight for hikers. As the tourist office Visit La Palma announces, the route is again accessible to hikers about eight months later.
The hiking route leads along the ridge of the Cumbre Vieja. It is the area that has brought great media attention to the Canary Island in 2021. For more than three months, a volcano spewed smoke, ash and lava at temperatures in excess of 1,000 degrees. It was the longest eruption in the island’s history.
The hike leads past the cooled lava
The “Ruta de los Volcanes” hiking trail, which has now been reopened, leads along the volcanic chain from the Refugio del Pilar in the center to Fuencaliente in the south of the island. Hikers walk directly past the cooled lava flows from the most recent volcanic eruption and see the natural spectacle up close. The destination of the approximately 24-kilometer route is the Teneguía volcano and the Fuencaliente lighthouse with the adjacent salt marshes.
The hiking route is considered challenging. Because even if the difference in altitude of 730 meters seems quite harmless, according to the tourist office, a strong wind blows through the open location and hikers are also exposed to intensive solar radiation.
