According to Spain’s main air traffic authority Aena, 15 airports were closed in Asturies, Bilbao, Santander, Vigo, Pamplona, Valladolid, La Rioja, Santiago de Compostela, San Sebastian, Vitoria, Saragossa, La Coruna, Asturies, Burgos, Leon and Salamanca.
The airports will remain closed till at least 4pm Spanish local time when the authorities will assess whether it is safe for air travel.
Portugal was also severely effected by the ash clouds as ANA, the country’s air traffic authority said over 104 flights from Porto, Faro and Lisbon airports were cancelled.
Thousands of people from all over the globe have been effected by the latest air traffic as transatlantic flights were effected along with European flights from the UK, Germany, France and other countries, either halted or delayed flights to Spain and Portugal.
Airliners have urged passengers to check their flight status before arriving at the airport and urged passengers who call in to have patients.
The Volcano which erupted last month, sent a huge plume of ash to the air causing the worst aerial shutdown
since World war II, leaving 100,000 flights grounded dozens of airports closed and over a billion dolars of damage to airliners and other effected authorities.
The latest disruptions come after warnings were made by scientists monitoring the Icelandic volcano that the ash clouds had gotten worse with hights as much as 30,000 feet being reached.
There are also warnings that further disruptions may be faced in Europe with winds sending the devastating ash clouds towards the UK.
