In a surprise move, Olympic Air and Aegean Air have proposed a merger.
While this is still subject to various approvals, what it means to the traveler to Greece is that competition in the Greek skies will be limited once again to a virtual monopoly.
The new company will maintain the Olympic Air name if the deal is approved. I’m hoping that the Aegean Air philosophy, which has won multiple awards in recent years, will prevail over the somewhat spotty record of Olympic Air’s predecessor, Olympic Airlines.
If this deal goes through, and you have tickets on Aegean Airlines, they should be honored but expect some changes in schedules and service routes as the deal proceeds – assuming that it does.
