Emirates Airline was revealed to have placed the largest contract in the history of civil aviation with Airbus.
Emirates Airline has now ordered another 32 A380 superjumbo aircraft, taking its total order to 90. This new order is worth about $11.5 billion at list price. This contract comes as the airline sector is starting to recover from the worst worldwide economic downturn in decades. It also makes Emirates Airline the biggest superjumbo customer.
Emirates Airline chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum announced the contract at the Berlin Air Show. He said that this commitment shows their confidence in the future growth of the industry. The superjumbo is their flagship in terms of innovation, generating revenue, passenger comfort, operating and environmental efficiency, he added.
Airlines worldwide have hesitated to order the superjumbo for fear they wouldn’t have the demand to fill the aircraft. However, Emirates Airline made nearly $1 billion last year in net profit, despite the recession. They currently serve 8 destinations with the 10 A380s they own now, including Toronto, Sydney, Heathrow and Seoul. As more airports adapt to accommodate the plane, which is the largest for passengers in the world, the airline plans to add more destinations served with the aircraft.
