{"id":6541,"date":"2018-04-05T13:01:44","date_gmt":"2018-04-05T10:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/?p=6541"},"modified":"2024-03-08T10:55:53","modified_gmt":"2024-03-08T10:55:53","slug":"philippines-famous-boracay-island-to-close-for-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/philippines-famous-boracay-island-to-close-for-repairs\/","title":{"rendered":"Philippines famous Boracay island to close for repairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>President Rodrigo Duterte approved the closure of world-famous Boracay Island beginning at the end of the month.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cBora will close for six months effective 26 April,\u201d presidential spokesperson Harry Roque told reporters on the sidelines of a Cabinet meeting in Manila.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte made the decision following an \u201cexhaustive discussion\u201d and the recommendations by local government and a number of agencies, including the Interior, Environment and Natural Resources and Tourism departments. The move paves the way for the island\u2019s rehabilitation, Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Guevarra said a state of emergency would be declared, allowing for the release of disaster funds to assist an estimated 36,000 workers on the island.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 12,000 residents who live on the island and non-residents will be barred entry while repairs are made.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6549\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/boracay-island-close.jpg\" alt=\"Philippines famous Boracay island to close for repairs\" width=\"610\" height=\"337\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6549\" title=\"\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Philippines famous Boracay island to close for repairs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Duterte has been vocal since February about his intent to close <strong>Boracay<\/strong>. He has described it as a \u201ccesspool\u201d and said environmental violations by businesses has led to deteriorating conditions, particularly to the island\u2019s sewerage and zoning.<\/p>\n<p>As early as 2015, the environmental department warned of closures to businesses not in compliance with government regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte had earlier gave Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu six months to address the environmental issues in the island. Located in central <strong>Philippines<\/strong>, Boracay Island is a world-famous tourist destination and was named by various international travel and destination magazines as one of the world\u2019s best in 2012, 2014 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The Provincial Municipal tourism office reported a record-high 2 million tourists on Boracay in 2017 &#8212; 16 percent higher than the 1.7 million tourists the previous year. More than half, 1.06 million, were foreigners.
