{"id":6089,"date":"2017-08-07T11:53:28","date_gmt":"2017-08-07T10:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/?p=6089"},"modified":"2020-05-20T07:30:16","modified_gmt":"2020-05-20T06:30:16","slug":"turkish-dig-uncovers-1800-year-old-writing-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/turkish-dig-uncovers-1800-year-old-writing-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkish dig uncovers 1,800-year-old writing tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6091\" src=\"http:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/writing-tool.jpg\" alt=\"Turkish dig uncovers 1,800-year-old writing tool\" width=\"610\" height=\"343\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/writing-tool.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/writing-tool-340x191.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/writing-tool-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.turizmtatilseyahat.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/writing-tool-533x300.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Archeologists exploring Assos in northwestern Turkey find ancient bronze stylus.<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers have uncovered a 1,800-year-old writing implement, or stylus, at the Assos archeological site in northwestern Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Assos, also known as Behramkale, was one of the most important port cities of the ancient age and possesses crucial cultural heritage from the region\u2019s Roman period, including an antique theater, agora, necropolis and walls.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Anadolu Agency, head of the Assos excavations, Professor Nurettin Arslan of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University, said the bronze instrument had a point at one end and a flat edge at the other.<\/p>\n<p>According to Arslan, this tool would have been used to write, take notes and make calculations on wax tablets used in that period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe flat part at the back side of the stylus was used to make corrections,\u201d he said, likening it to today\u2019s erasers.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that students and merchants of the time used these kinds of writing tools, Arslan said that some pupils would have used it to write on sand or ceramic floors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents who were financially better off, used it to write on wax tablets, to learn how to read and write as well as to practice their handwriting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Merchants and rich people who did their own accounting also used these kinds of implements, he added.<\/p>\n<p>According to Arslan, one needed to be literate to own this kind of stylus. He said that not only free people but also some slaves were literate at that period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducated slaves could also use these &#8230; for their owners\u2019 calculations or for certain notes,\u201d Arslan added.<\/p>\n<p>According to Arslan, as people during that period used wax tablets, they needed to make their writing tools from a hard material.
